How experiences mediated through VR technologies could contribute in changing human-environment affective relationships?
BECOMING SOMA | 2022
BECOMING SOMA is an ongoing project on non-human virtual embodiment led by the creative studio Leaving Space.
A joint initiative between filmmakers Ugo Petronin and Tim Travers Hawkins, the project aims to understand the process of embodiment when applied to non-human beings. The research phase focuses on the specific context of Virtual Reality, and asks how experiences mediated through those technologies could contribute in changing human-environment affective relationships?
Virtual Reality setups - through immersivity and sensory interactivity - often produce a connection between the users and their virtual representations that allows for an embodied experience. When this bond is strong enough a phenomenon known as the Illusion of Virtual Body Ownership is generated. Users accept the virtual body to be their own biological body. But what happens when this body is not human or humanoid?
Becoming Soma is supported by the Nederlands Filmfonds.
